The Art of Giving - Rena Demosthenous

People
AT THE BEGINNING OF 2020, RENA PRESENTED HER FIRST BOOK, “VOLUNTEERING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT”, DEMONSTRATING THAT STRATEGY DEVELOPMENT WITHIN A WELL-STRUCTURED, LOCAL COMMUNITY CAN LEAD ITS CITIZENS TO CREATE A STRONG CULTURE OF GIVING AND A GREATER SENSE OF UNITY WITHIN THE POPULACE.

Rena’s participation in volunteering stemmed from her professional career as a teacher in secondary public education. She had a strong belief that teachers should be multifaceted and work beyond the limits of their profession. So she decided to create a volunteer group. However, the roots of her desire to volunteer ran much deeper: “Volunteering has always run deep within my family. As a child, I used to observe and listen to my father who was a member of various charitable organizations and always keen to offer his help to those in need. My social activities in the Municipality of Aglantzia began many years before my election to the ranks of the Local Government. I used to teach for many years at the high schools of Aglantzia, having volunteer work as an integral part of my daily life within my workplace. My election to office in 2016 was the seal on my commitment as an active citizen of my community. This was followed by a multitude of actions; my participation in NGOs and the writing of my book – a conscious initiative that came as a result of lengthy research and analysis of the real needs of society. The objective of this study was to utilize appropriate techniques in order that citizens, students and organized groups develop a stance and attitude that will contribute to their local communities, and beyond.”

The cultivation of solidarity and love are primarily taught within the confines of the family, the school and the state, the latter of which plays an important role in the shaping of conscientious citizens... “The role of the state is to transform volunteering into a basic support platform by instilling the value of social contribution within its citizens. The most recent generation has matured within a society that faces a multileveled crisis of values, ideologies, and financial challenges. It has learned to offer and accept solidarity, charity and support. Thus, a new modern concept of volunteering was created, one that aims to solve contemporary problems such as discrimination of all kinds, human rights violations, and environmental and cultural issues. As for real human wealth, it’s none other than giving back to humankind and society.”

“The new generation has realized humanity’s greatest gift is giving back to community.”
